Following the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, WLIW21 celebrates the best our northern neighbors have to offer in Visions® of Canada, premiering nationwide on PBS throughout March (check local listings). Traveling east to west from the Atlantic Maritime Provinces to British Columbia, WLIW21’s Visions® series spans six time zones to showcase Canada’s diverse natural beauty and vibrant cities. From wine country to the Hockey Hall of Fame, from the abstract beauty of the ‘earth paintings’ formed by low tide on the Bay of Fundy, to the height of commerce along the St. Lawrence River, Visions® of Canada reveals a country of amazing contrasts that form a cultural and geographical mosaic. Stunning high definition aerial and ground footage, paired with music and informative narration, give rich historical context to dramatic land and seascapes.

Vancouver is one small jewel among many to be found in the world’s second-largest country, which has hosted the Olympics twice before. Visions® of Canada tours Montreal and Calgary, the sites of the 1976 Summer Olympics and 1988 Winter Olympics, respectively. Fly over Montreal Olympic Park’s futuristic Olympic Village and the world’s tallest leaning tower at the base of Olympic Stadium, and in Calgary, the Saddledome and Canada Olympic Park, home to the Olympic Hall of Fame and Museum. Other highlights include Halifax, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, Quebec City, the Great Lakes, Ottawa, Kingston, Toronto, Lake Louise, the Canadian Rockies, Victoria, and Niagara Falls — you’d have to be in a barrel to get closer views!

Produced by WLIW21 for WNET.ORG, Visions® of Canada is the 24th program in the acclaimed Visions® series, which has been bringing audiences the world’s top destinations like no tour could for more than a decade. Watch past episodes now.

Hosted by Clannad’s Grammy Award-winning Moya Brennan, Music of Ireland — Welcome Home tells the definitive story of contemporary Irish music, focusing on the Emerald Isle’s greatest musical exports, their influence on America and the music’s global impact. Beginning in 1960 with the Clancy Brothers, the new documentary features exclusive interviews and performances from The Chieftains’ Paddy Moloney, Riverdance’s Michael Flatley and Bill Whelan, U2’s Bono and Adam Clayton, Sinéad O’Connor, Pete Seeger, Live Aid and Band Aid founder Bob Geldof of The Boomtown Rats, former Celtic Woman Órla Fallon, The Dubliners’ John Sheahan, Black 47’s Larry Kirwan, six-time Academy Award-nominated director Jim Sheridan, the late Liam Clancy in his final U.S. television interview, and other great icons of Irish popular culture. See vintage clips of The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem on The Ed Sullivan Show, Judy Collins playing music from the ‘old country,’ The Pogues and Van Morrison with The Chieftains on RTE’s Late, Late Show, Riverdance’s debut at Eurovision and more. Revealing stories include Seeger’s discovery of Irish music, Bob Dylan educating Bono on the Clancy Brothers and the McPeake family, the inspiration behind Van Morrison’s music and lyrics, Riverdance’s beginnings, and The Chieftains’ early days. A must-see for music fans, Music of Ireland — Welcome Home explores the impact of Irish music in America and the world.

The Supremes perform at The T.A.M.I. Show.

One of the rarest rock events ever captured on film, the 1964 concert known at The T.A.M.I. Show, short for Teen Age Music International, hasn’t been seen in its entirety since it originally appeared in theaters more than 40 years ago. The first concert movie of the rock era, The T.A.M.I. Show captures many future Rock and Roll Hall of Famers, Motown and British Invasion acts in their early prime. Highlights include performances of “Johnny B. Goode” and “Maybellene” by Chuck Berry; “You’ve Really Got a Hold on Me” by Smokey Robinson and the Miracles; “Pride and Joy” and “Can I Get a Witness” by Marvin Gaye; “Surfin’ USA” and “I Get Around” by The Beach Boys; “Baby Love” and “Where Did Our Love Go” by The Supremes; “Out of Sight” and “Prisoner of Love” by James Brown and the Flames; and “Around and Around,” “Off the Hook,” and “I’m Alright” by The Rolling Stones.

Aside from the five rock groups, all of the performers are backed by a band that’s come to be known as the Wrecking Crew, famed for playing on all the Phil Spector-produced hits and including future stars Glen Campbell and Leon Russell, among others. Fanita James, Jean King and future solo star Darlene Love, billed as the Blossoms, provide backing vocals. The show was filmed live at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium in 1964 — a mere seven months after the Beatles appear on The Ed Sullivan Show and introduced the swinging 60s to America.

Over the last 30 years, much of the world has moved on, choosing faster, cleaner, more modern transportation and leaving America — and Detroit — behind. Blueprint America journeys beyond Detroit’s blighted urban landscape to Spain, home to one of the world’s most modern and extensive transit systems; to California, where voters recently said yes to America’s first high-speed rail system; and to Washington, where Congress will soon decide whether to finally push America’s transportation into the 21st century. Demonstrating how the auto industry, which created the transportation system that is now fraught with so many problems, is also the industry that puts Detroit in perhaps the best position to transform itself for the transportation of the future, the film brings a vision of the city’s possible transportation future to life.
