Picking up where Music of Ireland — Welcome Home left off, Music of Ireland — Welcome to America continues the definitive story of contemporary Irish music, focusing on the greatest musical exports from the Emerald Isle from the 1980s through today. The new performance documentary features a behind-the-scenes look at the emergence of U2 and the band’s development into one of the world’s most popular touring acts; the Dublin singer/songwriter scene, featuring Academy Award-winner Glen Hansard of The Swell Season and The Frames, Damien Rice and Damien Dempsey; and Sinéad O’Connor’s U.S. breakthrough and papal controversy. Other highlights include interviews with members of pop/rock acts The Cranberries, The Corrs, The Script, and Black 47, and vintage performance footage of U2 on RTE’s Late, Late Show (1980), The Cranberries on RTE’s On the Waterfront (1991) and The Script on RTE’s Late, Late Show (2008). The documentary also explores the stories behind PBS phenomena Lord of the Dance and Celtic Woman and Irish music’s influence on American culture. Clannad’s Grammy Award-winning Moya Brennan returns as host and conducts intimate interviews to reveal each artist’s special relationship with Ireland and America, and how their musical lives have been influenced by it. A production of the Elevation Group. A presentation of WLIW21 in association with WNET.ORG. Funded in part by Barnes & Noble and Tourism Ireland.
