POSITION:SUPERVISING PRODUCER           
LOCATION: New York, NY

WLIW21 New York seeks a supervising producer to oversee the daily operations of assigned programs in production and post-production.

The supervising producer will be responsible for screening programs for a variety of ongoing series for content, legal, and packaging review; overseeing (and executing when necessary) all packaging, delivery, and promotional processes for all the department’s programs; developing, in conjunction with the appropriate project managers, budgets for new projects, and assessing budgets provided by independent producers; supervising the progress of projects in development; maintaining the department information pipeline; and assisting in proposal evaluation and managing the flow of new proposals that need the review of senior staff. Ideally the supervising producer will be able to participate in some research and development work.

To be considered, applicants must have a BS or BA in Film, Television Production, or Liberal Arts, with specialized knowledge of journalism and public affairs, or equivalent professional experience.  They must have a minimum of eight (8) years of experience in the management of television program production, to include the development and administration of production schedules and budgets, and production staff supervision.  They must also have a minimum of four (4) years of editorial experience with emphasis in public and cultural affairs, including experience in dealing with a wide range of contemporary issues, e.g., political, financial, medical, etc.  Applicants must demonstrate exceptional written and verbal communication and presentation skills; superior planning, organization, problem analysis and decision-making skills; and strong leadership and interpersonal communication skills.  Applicants preferred are those who have prior experience with a PBS station, and/or those who have prior experience working with an independent production company.

POSITION:ASSISTANT PRODUCER
LOCATION: New York, NY

WLIW21 New York seeks an assistant producer.  Working with and reporting to staff and outside producers, he or she will perform a variety of production and administrative tasks essential to the research, planning, production and editing of various program elements, including news and story segments.

Responsibilities and tasks include the following:

  • Assists in all aspects of production including:  research, development, pre-interviewing, booking and scheduling interviewees, production and post-production.   
  • Writes and presents orally in clear and coherent prose, precis’s of information gathered in research and recommendations about material and people that might be included in segment or program. 
  • Finds, gathers and clears supporting material, including graphics, footage and music. Conducts on-camera interviews.
  • Works collegially with technical and other personnel, including camera crews and editors and occasionally oversees their work. 
  • Leads and directs production staff in the creative development of all program content.  Supervises their daily work, communicates work goals and performance standards, evaluating their on-going work performances, and providing regular and specific performance feedback. 
  • Provides the creative energy and ideas to make the product distinctive.

To be considered, you must demonstrate a working knowledge of all aspects of television production, and you must have a BS or BA in Film, Television Production, Broadcast Journalism, Communications, Fine Arts or related field.  You must have at least six (6) years experience in the management of television program production, to include the development and administration of production schedules and budgets, and production staff supervision.  You must have a minimum of five (5) years editorial experience with emphasis in public and cultural affairs, including experience in dealing with a wide range of contemporary issues, e.g., political, financial, medical, etc.  Finally, you must offer exceptional written and verbal communication, and presentation skills; exceptional planning, organization, problem analysis and decision-making skills; and strong leadership and interpersonal communication skills. 

Prior experience with a PBS station, network, or independent production company is preferred.

POSITION: RESEARCH/PRODUCTION ASSOCIATE
LOCATION: New York, NY

WLIW21 New York seeks a research/production associate to help in the gathering and production of news coverage for a weekly program.

Specific responsibilities include attending news events such as press conferences and congressional hearings; assisting with production set-up and logistics for television shoots and interviews; and working with assistant producers and the tape editor to produce video packages for weekly news briefs.  The individual chosen will also log shots for editing; transcribe interviews; and write weekly news briefs.  Finally, he or she will research background information, identifying potential sources and conducting “pre-interviews” for both news items and longer format stories.

To be considered for the position, applicants must have a Bachelor’s degree and an enthusiasm for tackling varied responsibilities.

POSITION:PRODUCER
LOCATION: New York, NY

WLIW21 New York seeks a producer to plan and coordinate the complete range of activities involved in the production of television programs.  He or she will supervise a production project team staff, and plan and coordinate the use of in-studio or on-location technical production resources.

Responsibilities and tasks include the following:

  • Interviews and selects other production staff members, writers, and cast principals, and external talent, as required.
  • Outlines program to be produced to writers and other production staff members, and evaluates finished treatments and scripts.
  • Composes or edits program scripts to meet management requirements, or other organizational creative standards, using IBM or Macintosh personal computers and attendant word processing and video editing software.
  • Coordinates various aspects of production, such as audio work, scenes, music, timing, camera work, and script writing.
  • Instructs staff on when to schedule studio and location shoots and broadcasts and on the development and coordination of the details required to obtain the desired production results.
  • Reviews on-going production activities regularly, to ensure that intended objectives and goals are attained.
  • Screens and edits taped programs, using video-editing equipment to select scenes or clips to be used for promotional purposes.
  • Listens to audio tape recordings, using audio equipment, to verify and assess how program, scripts, or other sound effects conform to broadcast standards.
  • May represents the station at specific events or functions, acting as liaison to independent producers of programs or program segments acquired or produced for broadcast.
  • May review program budgets and expenditures for productions to evaluate conformance to financial plans and budgetary restrictions.
  • May coordinate the production details required to produce live programs or segments from either the station’s studios or remote locations.
  • May be designated, according to level of responsibility and by type of program produced, as a Senior or Executive Producer.produced, as a Senior or Executive Producer.

To be considered, you must have a Bachelor of Arts degree in Broadcasting, Journalism, Communications, or a related academic discipline, or equivalent work experience.  You must have a minimum of 8 years of progressively more responsible work experience in television production, to include 3 years experience in the management of production projects, the coordination of technical production resources, and the supervision of production professionals.  You must demonstrate exceptional creative, conceptual, oral and written communication, and presentation skills; strong planning, organization, analytical, and decision-making skills; and strong interpersonal, leadership and team building skills.

DIRECTOR/PRODUCER

WLIW is seeking an experienced Director/Producer to take a leadership role at one of the most prolific public television stations in America.

The successful candidate will have extensive experience in directing a wide variety of studio based programming including talk show, panel, magazine and live multi-camera formats with audience.

In addition, the successful candidate must have the ability to manage and motivate an experienced production crew.

This position also requires experience as a producer. The Director/Producer will be responsible for producing one local program per week, including researching, planning, producing, directing and posting that program as required to meet deadlines.

The Director/Producer will work closely with the production department and clients in all aspects of production including studio and field. Responsibilities include:

  • directing multi-camera studio productions including, but not limited to, five weekly half-hours, assorted ninety-minute panel discussions with live audience, live and pre-taped pledge breaks for the membership department
  • assisting in scheduling production crew for shoots
  • providing technical expertise during production
  • managing the completion of the program to meet the station's expectations through the entire pre and post production aspects of the program

POSITION: Communications and Station Relations Intern
DEPARTMENT: Communications
LOCATION: New York, NY

The Communications and Station Relations department is responsible for the promotion of WLIW productions and presentations to local and national media and station staff at the 355 PBS member stations. Our department goals are to secure earned media placements to promote viewer tune-in to WLIW21 and other PBS stations airing our productions, and to encourage PBS stations to schedule our productions and use them in their outreach.

RESPONSIBILITIES: The intern's duties would include writing press releases and program highlights, setting up and maintaining media lists in Excel, follow-up phone calls with media, community organizations and PBS station staff, maintaining press clip files, assist on general publicity mailings and email campaigns for local and national programming, internet research for grassroots outreach outlets and program materials, website content updates, assist with writing and proofreading WLIW21 Members Guide. Some of these duties would be on-going weekly tasks, some would be project based.

QUALIFICATIONS: The student will ultimately report to the Director of Communications & Stations Relations but will complete tasks assigned by the Communications Associate and Station Relations Coordinator related to specific projects. The intern will be expected to meet deadlines, look over their work before handing in an assignment, retain a professional attitude and ask questions if an assignment is not clearly understood. Specific results will vary according to assignment.

This is an excellent opportunity for students interested in pursuing a career in Communications, Public Relations or Marketing. The intern will get hands-on experience in a small department, and will probably get to do more than they would in many other office settings learning their craft.

Applicants should demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills, be detailed-oriented. They must be proficient with Excel, Word and basic Microsoft Office applications, comfortable on the phone and researching on the internet. Preferred candidates are students majoring in Communication, Public Relations or Marketing.

POSITION: Production Assistant/Tape Librarian Intern
