Sid the Science Kid is an engaging and entertaining new animated preschool series promoting exploration and science readiness in a kid-friendly way – no lab coats or test tubes here. Sid explores the science of everyday realities that preschoolers face with the help of his friends and family.
Sid, the show’s energetic and inquisitive preschool star, starts each episode with a new question (“Why are my shoes shrinking?” “Why do bananas get mushy?”) and embarks on a fun-filled day of finding answers. Sid’s day is full of discovery and wonder. He gets a kick out of putting rolie polie bugs under his magnifying glass or asking lots of questions with his hand-held microphone. Through his adventure, Sid encourages preschoolers to think about how to get answers to their own questions by exploring the world around them. Joining Sid are Gabriela, his best friend, self-confident, athletic and member of the “Bug Club”; May, sweet and empathetic with a wonderful imagination; Gerald, full of boundless energy; teacher Susie, whose warmth and playfulness make science fun; Grandma, feisty, fun and very involved in Sid’s life; Mom (aka Alice), a witty, busy Web designer always ready to encourage Sid; Zeke, Sid’s baby brother who loves to bang on things; and Dad (aka Mort), patient and always willing to get involved in Sid’s explorations and discoveries.
Each week, the series will feature five programs centered on a single scientific concept. Weekly themes for the series include Transformation/Change, Senses, Health, Simple Machines, Backyard Science and Weather, with the premiere week focused on Tools/Measurement and the premiere episode titled “The Sticker Chart.”
Based on the curriculum of Preschool Pathways to Science (PrePS©), Sid the Science Kid delves into children’s natural curiosity about science in their everyday lives. Different aspects of life science, physical science and earth science will be introduced to encourage preschoolers to ask, observe and predict how the world around them works. Along the way, viewers will be introduced to Sid’s family and friends who help him find the answers to the questions of the day.
Launching at the same time as the broadcast series is the interactive Web site at pbskids.org/sid. Sid and his school friends will host the Sid the Science Kid Web site. The characters will greet visitors, prompt them to explore and make the site feel like a personal play date with Sid and friends. The Web site will feature three discovery zones: The Super Fab Lab at Sid’s school, the playground and Sid’s kitchen. Each zone will host numerous games that together encompass all of the series curricular themes.
The site also features:
– A child-friendly video player that lets kids view show clips, including songs and real-world segments.
– Easy-to-use tools and tips for parents, teachers, and caregivers to help build a strong foundation for early science exploration.
– A book of printable activities that will include coloring pages and fun offline activities found in the show.
