Life was never better than when a game of stickball, a ride down the Grand Concourse, an Orchard Beach outing, or a trip to Yankee Stadium to see Lou Gehrig was all in a day of fun. WLIW New York presents NEW YORK THE WAY IT WAS: THE BRONX, the fifth installment in the station's Emmy Award-winning series.

In NEW YORK THE WAY IT WAS: THE BRONX, many luminaries from New York City's only "mainland" borough take viewers on a special trip back to the Bronx of the 1930s through the '60s, including U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell; actor Judd Hirsch; television personality Regis Philbin; Yankee great Phil Rizzuto; former Vice Presidential candidate Geraldine Ferraro; singer Dion DiMucci; Bronx Borough President Fernando Ferrer; the late entertainer Shari Lewis; comedians Red Buttons, Robert Klein and Mal Z. Lawrence; and 1969 Met Ed Kranepool.

Whether on the roof taking family pictures or communicating via the heating pipes, Bronx residents created tight-knit mini-communities, and NEW YORK THE WAY IT WAS: THE BRONX takes viewers back to the days when going to a friend's house meant running down the hall, and fetching the children meant calling them from the window. The program also visits inner-borough communities including Parkchester, created specifically for middle-class residents; the Grand Concourse, home for aspiring Bronx families; and Riverdale, home to wealthy and celebrated New Yorkers. In any of these communities, children growing up in the Bronx used their imagination to keep occupied, and NEW YORK THE WAY IT WAS: THE BRONX remembers favorite games including stickball (Regis Philbin and Robert Klein's favorite), marbles and skully (Colin Powell's favorite), and girls' stoop games (as recalled by Geraldine Ferraro). And whether one went to De Witt Clinton, Evander Childs, Taft or Bronx High School of Science, high schools created indelible memories of childhood sweethearts, sports and parties, where, as Dion recalls, doo wop groups gave birth to rock 'n' roll.

From the Bronx Zoo to the New York Botanical Gardens, during afternoons at public pools like Castke Hill or Shorehaven, or in any of the parks (Van Cortlandt, Crotona, Pelham Bay) borough planners designed to "color the Bronx green," NEW YORK THE WAY IT WAS: THE BRONX visits the landmarks where families enjoyed being families, including the destination that created unrivaled community pride Yankee Stadium. As recalled by Phil Rizzuto, the Yankees, described in the program as "perfection in pinstripes," won ten pennants and seven world championships in only a twelve year period starting in 1949. NEW YORK THE WAY IT WAS: THE BRONX documents some of baseball's greatest legends -- Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Yogi Berra and Mickey Mantle.
