Crossing the Line: The Lucero Murder delves into the issues surrounding Ecuadorian immigrant Marcelo Lucero’s murder by seven Patchogue-Medford High School students, who will stand trial for the hate crime beginning in March. This new WLIW21 production uses the November 2008 stabbing and the teens’ admission of hunting Latinos for sport as a case study for a thoughtful roundtable discussion about hate crimes, race relations and immigration on Long Island. Filmed in January at Stony Brook University, Crossing the Line: The Lucero Murder features Matthew Crosson, President of the Long Island Association; Francisco Hernandez, a Latino advocate from Patchogue and Hispanic Advisory Rep for Suffolk County, District 7; Robert C. Smith, Professor of Immigration Studies at Baruch College’s School of Public Affairs and author of Mexican New York: Transnational Worlds of New Immigrants; Newsday Columnist Joye Brown; and Lyn May, former host of WLIW21’s news and public affairs series Q&A. The one-hour program also includes Nassau County Police Department’s Hate: Crossing the Line video, featuring teens talking to teens about what a hate crime is and the real world ramifications of committing a hate crime, and segments from Running Wild – Hate and Immigration on Long Island, a documentary about the aftermath of Lucero’s murder and its effect on the Patchogue-Medford community, which premiered on WLIW21 in November. The entire program will be available on WLIW21’s video portal – wliw.org/video – after the broadcast.

“Our program isn’t about fueling resentment and sparking controversy. It’s meant to help the community understand why these teens committed this deadly act and educate people on this important issue,” stated Senior Producer Theresa Statz-Smith. “The community has to come together to prevent future hate crimes. Our hope is that Crossing the Line motivates viewers to become an active part of the solution.”

Since the Lucero murder, the U.S. Justice Department has begun investigating Suffolk County hate crimes and police response, and the Southern Poverty Law Center published Climate of Fear: Latino Immigrants in Suffolk County, N.Y. The September 2009 report found that “Latino immigrants in Suffolk County are regularly harassed, taunted, and pelted with objects hurled from cars. They are frequently run off the road while riding bicycles, and many report being beaten with baseball bats and other objects,” and called the situation, “a microcosm of a problem facing the entire United States, where FBI statistics suggest a 40% rise in anti-Latino hate crimes between 2003 and 2007, the latest numbers available.”

Crossing the Line: The Lucero Murder tackles tough questions including: what does this terrible event say about Long Island? What about the struggle recent Hispanic immigrants are having finding their place in the third most segregated community in the nation? And what can we do to make sure this does not happen again? During the program Hernandez, who has experienced a hate crime first-hand and is also the father of a Patchogue-Medford High School student, discusses his work with a wide variety of Hispanic organizations and Suffolk County Legislator for District 7 Jack Eddington (D, I) to educate the community and find solutions. Brown recounts her story about being verbally harassed because of the color of her skin, and the differences between how Nassau and Suffolk counties have responded to the influx of immigrants over the last decade. “The institutions that are necessary to change this problem on Long Island exist,” explains Crosson during the program. “And I think, as so often happens unfortunately, it takes a tragedy – even a catastrophe – to cause people to focus on what is happening around them…I think the death of Marcelo Lucero may have been that occasion and it’s causing Long Islanders to realize that we have a problem and collectively we need to solve it.”

A production of WLIW21 for WNET.ORG. Produced in Partnership with SUNY Stony Brook. Executive Producer: John Servidio. Senior Producer: Theresa Statz-Smith. Director: Dini Diskin-Zimmerman.

Brennan, Enya’s eldest sister, conducts intimate interviews that weave a thread of connections and themes, both past and present, that link Ireland’s unique and sizeable contribution to both the music world and the creative arts – from rock to folk, country to classical, dance, film, and literature.
“This is about a country, its people, their undeniable spirit and the amazing music that has transcended generations. There is no place like Ireland,” stated Executive Producer Denny Young. “For such a small country to produce such amazing talent and the way their music defines the people, is just extraordinary. It has fascinated me for most of my life and is something I wanted more people to be in tune with.”

“This has been an amazing journey so far,” commented Moya Brennan. “Never in my 40 years of working in the Irish music community had I totally recognized the impact we have all had on the world generally and in America specifically. And I must say, it has been a real treat to be on the other side of the camera talking to Glen, Damien, Paddy, Sinead, Bono, Adam and so many others.”

WLIW21 in association with WNET.ORG presents the new public television special Daryl Hall & John Oates – Live at the Troubadour in honor of Daryl Hall and John Oates’ recent Grammy nomination for “Sara Smile” from the landmark concert CD. In May 2008, the rock ‘n’ soul duo took the stage at the legendary Troubadour for the first time since playing their earliest Los Angeles shows at the club 35 years before. Premiering nationwide on public television beginning February 26 and throughout March (check local listings), Daryl Hall & John Oates – Live at the Troubadour features the best performances from the rock ’n’ soul duo’s much anticipated two-night concert, featuring sing-along hits such as “Maneater,” “Private Eyes,” “Rich Girl,” “Sara Smile,” “Kiss On My List,” “She’s Gone,” “One on One,” “You Make My Dreams,” and more.

“John and I have a lot of great memories associated with performing at the Troubadour, since it was our first show in LA,” said Daryl. “It’s like going back to where it all began for us. We’ve always had an enthusiastic following in Los Angeles, and this is a chance for our fans to see us up close and personal in an intimate setting.”

In the Live at the Troubadour special, Daryl Hall and John Oates are backed by a band comprised of longtime member T-Bone Wolk on guitar and vocals, Mike Braun on drums, Charles DeChant on sax, keys and vocals, Eliot Lewis on keys and vocals, Zev Katz on bass, and Everett Bradley on percussion and vocals.

Formed in Philadelphia, Daryl Hall and John Oates have enjoyed six number-one singles and five Top 10 singles between the mid-70s and the mid-80s from their six consecutive multi-platinum albums — ’76’s Bigger Than Both of Us, ’80’s Voices, ’81’s Private Eyes, 82’s H2O, ’83’s Rock N Soul, Part I, and ’84’s Big Bam Boom. In 1985, Daryl and John participated in the historic “We Are the World” session and closed that year’s Live Aid concert in Philadelphia. By 1987, the R.I.A.A. recognized Daryl Hall and John Oates as the number-one selling duo in music history, a record they still hold today.

In 2008, the duo was honored with the prestigious Icon Award during BMI’s 56th annual Pop Awards. The award has previously gone to the Bee Gees, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Paul Simon, Brian Wilson, Willie Nelson, James Brown, Ray Davies, Carlos Santana and Dolly Parton. Recently, Rachael Ray launched a campaign to get the duo inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Daryl and John also have been receiving recognition from younger artists including KT Tunstall, Gym Class Heroes and Finger Eleven, Chromeo, Fall Out Boy, all of whom have appeared on Daryl’s media and fan-praised webshow, Live From Daryl’s House.

WLIW21’s Visions® series has been bringing television audiences the world’s top destinations like no tour could for more than a decade. Visions® of Canada, the 24th program in the popular series, celebrates the best our northern neighbors have to offer, traveling east to west from the Atlantic Maritime Provinces to British Columbia. Following the February 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Visions® of Canada is part of special programming airing in March 2010 (check local listings) on PBS stations.

“Since we began the Visions® series in 1997, we have taken our viewers to some of the most interesting destinations in Europe, the Mediterranean and the Middle East for vicarious vacations,” says Executive Producer Roy A Hammond. “With Canada, we shot some of the most stunning images yet in the series, and right in our own backyard”. Visions® hits the highlights of the world’s second-largest country, spanning six time zones to showcase Canada’s diverse natural beauty and vibrant cities. Stunning high definition aerial and ground footage, paired with music and informative narration, give rich historical context to dramatic land and seascapes.

From wine country to the Hockey Hall of Fame, from the abstract beauty of the ‘earth paintings’ formed by low tide on the Bay of Fundy to the height of commerce along the St. Lawrence River, Visions® of Canada reveals a country of amazing contrasts that form a cultural and geographic mosaic. French, English, Irish, and Scottish roots meet Vancouver’s flourishing Chinatown. Palm trees and snow-capped mountains share a common land mass. East meets west, old meets new, tradition engages innovation, and a proud past comes face to face with an exciting future. And you’d have to be in a barrel to get closer to Niagara Falls.

Visions® of Canada begins in the east in the Maritime Provinces as the original Viking explorers might have. As the helicopter-mounted camera soars over Nova Scotia, it is hard to imagine such transcendent beauty was ever the site of decades of conflict, evidenced today only in the English and French names of places like Charlottetown (for King George’s wife), Halifax (an English lord) or Cape Breton (Brittany’s namesake). Visions® offers a new and unique perspective on some of Canada’s most famous locations, giving a taste of the history behind the Thousand Islands, plunging into the raging waters of Horseshoe Falls and much more. You’ll almost feel the cobblestones on the streets of Quebec City and the creative buzz of cosmopolitan Montreal, and then head west to experience the riches of the national capital in Ottawa, generally considered Canada’s best kept secret. Continuing west, the camera skims the surface looking for shipwrecks in Fathom Five Marine National Park, combs the beach at Lake Huron during the height of Canadian summer in Ontario, and finds itself, like so many, seduced by the pulse of Toronto’s modern metropolis. Here, the CN Tower, the tallest freestanding structure in North America, helps us find our bearings from anywhere in the city.

Moving over central Canada, the camera sweeps over the sea of grass that is the vast prairie lands, climbs high into the Rockies where only professional climbers venture, provides the quickest route to the top of the 621-foot Calgary Tower, teases the tranquil turquoise waters of Lake Louise among an abundance of pristine mirrored lakes nearly close enough to touch, and joins the ancient spirits above the Pacific Rim to see the world as it appears nowhere else.

After a journey of stirring beauty from east to west, the end of the continent at British Columbia can feel like the end of the world. But before the sun sets, Visions® of Canada tours Vancouver Harbor, the blue jewel in the green mountain setting discovered by Captain George Vancouver in the late 1700s — and then ends its journey in the capital of British Columbia, Victoria.

Visions® of Canada is the 24th program in WLIW21’s acclaimed Visions® series. Past programs include tours of Italy, Greece, Puerto Rico, France, and Israel. Visions® provides a visual itinerary… an emotional visit to a family homeland… a souvenir of the trip of a lifetime… or the virtual realization of a fantasy vacation – and always a one-of-a-kind experience.
