In the tradition of WLIW21’s award-winning New York The Way it Was series, we’re getting ready to explore the story of one of Long Island’s most interesting communities – Huntington. Following the tremendous success of New York War Stories, which featured viewer-contributed videos and letters, WLIW21’s production team turns to viewers like you once again for stories, photos and home movies of family celebrations, sporting events, carnivals, parades and other Huntington activities. If you lived in Huntington Village, Cold Spring Harbor, Huntington Station, Northport, Greenlawn, Dix Hills and Lloyd Neck between 1950 and 1990, please share with us your memories of the places and people that will always remind you of your hometown, Huntington. Our cameras can capture Huntington today; we need your help to tell the story of yesterday.
Send your photos or movies (any format) to:

Hailed as “the David Beckham of the classical scene,” young German violinist, David Garrett, weaves classical standards with rock and pop favorites in his first U.S. concert special. We were lucky to have David live in our studio April 8 during the exclusive broadcast premiere of “David Garrett: Live in Berlin,” and judging from your response – you snatched up most of the tickets to his April 22 concert at City Winery in 20 minutes! – you’ll be glad to know that David and his fast fingers will be back in WLIW21’s studio Wednesday, June 3 at 7:30 p.m.

DAVID GARRETT: LIVE IN BERLIN aspires to cultivate an appreciation for classical music in today’s youth with songs ranging from Michael Jackson’s “Smooth Criminal” to Queen’s “Who Wants to Live Forever,” from Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons” to AC/DC’s “Thunderstruck” and Metallica’s “Nothing Else Matters,” as well as songs from the blockbuster films “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl,” “Aladdin” and “West Side Story.” A modern virtuoso, sometime model (Banana Republic, “Vogue,” and Fashion Week for Armani), and Guinness World Records holder for the fastest-ever performance of “The Flight of the Bumble Bee” – clocking in at a blistering 66 seconds – David Garrett is poised for American superstardom.

Rare 1959 TV Appearance by Jazz Legend in Honor of Kind of Blue 50th Anniversary
In a rare national television appearance filmed April 2, 1959, the legendary trumpet player performs with the Gil Evans Orchestra and one of his ‘great quintets,’ featuring tenor saxophonist John Coltrane, pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Jimmy Cobb. The set features “So What” off Kind of Blue (1959) — the biggest selling jazz record of all time — and tunes from Miles Ahead (1957). Taped for The Robert Herridge Theater at Studio 61 in New York City, and first broadcast July 21, 1960, this special should be considered essential viewing for jazz enthusiasts, or anyone who enjoys great timeless music. In an effort to go green, WLIW21 New York Public Television will discontinue the print publication of our monthly program guide, In Focus. May’s guide will be the last print issue. Read it now here.
Beginning in June, read WLIW21’s new online guide each month at wliw.org/guide. New features will include video, color images, and daily updated schedules for all channels — WLIW21, WLIW Create and WLIW World. Plus, WLIW21’s online guide helps our environment by creating one million less printed pages a year! To learn how you can go green, check out Going Green Long Island.
WLIW21’s online guide also utilizes your contributions more efficiently and allows us to put more of your donation toward programming as we face government and public funding deficits.
Thank you for supporting WLIW21 and our effort to go green!
