Premieres Thursdays at 10 p.m. beginning January 28 on WLIW21
Join wildlife adventurer Nigel Marven as he takes us on a sensory romp around the globe, in search of the biological roots of our senses. Why do particular sights, sounds, smells, and tastes have such powerful effects on us? How do we manage to block out intense pain? How does our sense of balance keep working under the most extreme conditions? Live action combined with special effects creates incredible imagery to convey the ‘feeling’ of how our senses work. Human Senses will be presented in three parts, with each installment dedicated to the exploration of two senses. The series premieres Thursdays at 10 p.m. beginning January 28 on WLIW21.Preview episode one, premiering January 28 at 10 p.m.
In the series premiere, “Smell/Taste,” Host Nigel Marven goes in search of the most disgusting and most attractive smells, and attempts to discover the basic biological reasons for this. Discover the biological reasons why humans eat such a range of diverse tasting dishes, from rotten raw duck eggs to a sweaty blue cheese, and watch while contestants at a chili-eating contest push their taste buds to the limit.
Preview episode two, premiering February 4 at 10 p.m.
Episode two, “Hearing/Balance,” explores the powerful effect sound has on how we feel about the world, and why. Also a look at balance, our deceptively complex “sixth sense,” as Marven investigates why spinning around in circles make us dizzy, why drinking alcohol makes it hard for us to walk in a straight line, and more.
Preview episode three, premiering February 11 at 10 p.m.
In the finale, “Touch/Vision,” we learn about the different density of touch sensors in the skin, which help explain why some parts of the body seem to have a much lower pain threshold. Marven also explores vision to find out why humans are so good at seeing some things, when at other times our brain can prevent us from seeing what’s right in front of our eyes.

Dear WLIW…i love the fact that you continue to present Jane Austin…however, i would just like to comment that the older versions are wonderfully done and i really prefer “Emma” with Gweneth Paltrow as opposed to the new one you are presenting at present where whomever plays Emma is rather shrewish looking, and her friend really a twit instead of in the Paltrow version being charming and quite beautiful, though “dense”!!..why do they keep remaking versions that aren’t as good as the older ones???….also would like to thank you again for showing “New Tricks”…i just LOVE idea of sharp older folks…a credit to your programming…any chance of running “The Thin Blue Line” again?….thank you as always for continuing to show the Brits!!!donna leive p.s.the latest Sherlock Holmes are terrific!!
I saw the Human Senses Episode: Touch; Vision when it was half over.
I would love to see it again from the beginning.
Will it be on again and if so when?
Thanks for your help.

WLIW keeps advertising a nature special ostensibly scheduled the past two Thursdays at 8 pm entitled “The Birds of Oz” about the parrots of Australia. (Not to be confused with the Birds of the Gods). Where did it go?
Will it be aired? I’d buy a CD if it were available, I don’t see it on your website
