EVENT DETAILS:

Pre-Event VIP Reception
Before the main food & wine tasting begins, Austrian wine and travel expert Fred Plotkin will lead an exclusive tasting of high-end Austrian wines and talk about his recent travels to Austria. Chef Kurt Gutenbrunner will discuss Austrian food and share exclusive canapés for VIPs that will not be available at the main event tasting.

Main Event
Chef Kurt Gutenbrunner, owner of KG-NY Restaurant Group (New York City’s Wallsé, Café Sabarsky, and Blaue Gans), will share sample size portions of traditional Austrian dishes, including smoked trout crepe (Palatschinken), and Austrian desserts to give a taste of what an Austrian dinner and Viennese hour are like. Supporters will also get to taste some of Austria’s best cheeses from producers Berglandmilch and Rupp, all while sipping on Austrian wines including Blaufraenkisch, Gemischter Satz, and the most famous of all, Gruener Veltliner. Event details are below.

Featured Wines
Blaufraenkisch: A red wine of velvet and spice, berry-rich. The name Blaufränkisch (literally “blue Franconian”) probably dates from the time of Charlemagne, when all high-qualities varieties were classified as “Franconian” (Fränkisch). In its youth this Austrian specialty is an impetuous, deeply fruity red wine, which with aging becomes more velvety and supple, gaining additional facets. Region: Burgenland

Gemischter Satz: The predominant varietal in the Viennese vineyards, a traditional white field blend, made even more modern with the use of organic or biodynamic agriculture and cutting-edge technology. This wine is not for the faint at heart: the nose and taste are intense. American wine journalist Alice Feiring praised it as “complex,” with flavors ranging from “mineral to honeysuckle.” Region: Vienna

Gruener Veltliner: A distinctive, full-bodied white wine. The bite of fresh-cracked pepper is there, and it is pronounced. “This is foodie wine. It goes perfectly with traditional Austrian cuisine,” declares Ludwig Holzer of Winzer Krems, one of Austria’s oldest wine producers. Region: Lower Austria

Featured Cheeses
Rupp: Mountain Cheese and Dorfkäse

Berglandmilch: Amadeus, Moosbacher and Asmonte

Chef Kurt Gutenbrunner
Kurt Gutenbrunner has earned abundant praise for his modern interpretation of Austrian cuisine and his seamless integration of food and art. Growing up with garden-fresh cooking in a small village on the Danube River in Austria, Gutenbrunner decided at age 14 that he wanted to become a chef. He earned a degree in culinary arts and at 16, apprenticed at the Relais & Chateau Richard Löwenherz in the Wachau region, where he developed an appreciation for regional wines, many of which are featured in his restaurants today. His popular cuisine, strong ideals and keen eye for design have secured Gutenbrunner a unique spot in New York’s culinary world – one that has allowed him to harmonize his two great loves: food and art.
