One of the rarest rock events ever captured on film, the 1964 concert known as The T.A.M.I. Show, short for Teen Age Music International, hasn’t been seen in its entirety since it originally appeared in theaters more than 40 years ago. The first concert movie of the rock era, The T.A.M.I. Show captures many future Rock and Roll Hall of Famers, Motown and British Invasion acts in their early prime. Highlights include performances of “Johnny B. Goode” and “Maybellene” by Chuck Berry; “You’ve Really Got a Hold on Me” by Smokey Robinson and the Miracles; “Pride and Joy” and “Can I Get a Witness” by Marvin Gaye; “Surfin’ USA” and “I Get Around” by The Beach Boys; “Baby Love” and “Where Did Our Love Go” by The Supremes; “Out of Sight” and “Prisoner of Love” by James Brown and the Flames; “Time is on My Side,” “It’s All Over Now” and “Around and Around” by The Rolling Stones; “Don’t Let the Sun Catch You Crying” by Gerry and the Pacemakers; and “The Little Old Lady (From Pasadena)” by Jan and Dean.

Aside from the five rock groups, all of the performers are backed by a band that’s come to be known as the Wrecking Crew, famed for playing on all the Phil Spector-produced hits and featuring future stars Glen Campbell and Leon Russell, among others. Fanita James, Jean King and future solo star Darlene Love, billed as the Blossoms, provide backing vocals. The show was filmed live at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium — a mere seven months after the Beatles appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show and introduced the swinging ’60s to America.

I am a member of WLIW21. We can all watch some shows on the computer now but I’m not giving up the comfort of my living room couch and other people with which to share a show. How much time can you spend in front of a computer? I am looking forward to this show!
