The WNET Group Launches Afterschool Superstars, a New Afternoon Instructional Programming Schedule for Kids on WLIW21 Beginning Monday, October 4

 

(New York, September 29, 2021) – Today, The WNET Group, home to New York’s PBS stations THIRTEEN and WLIW21, and operator of New Jersey’s statewide public television network NJ PBS, announced the launch of Afterschool Superstars, a new afterschool programming block featuring educational television programs to support students in pre-K through fifth grade. Afterschool Superstars will air weekdays from 3 to 5 p.m. on WLIW21 beginning Monday, October 4. Afterschool Superstars programs will also be available to stream on-demand at wliw.org/afterschool.

Building on The WNET Group’s longstanding commitment to education, Afterschool Superstars seeks to supplement the efforts of schools and communities to support all students through age-appropriate content and lessons covering literacy, math, social-emotional learning, art and science.

Afterschool Superstars programs include:

Kid Stew

Fridays at 3 p.m. on WLIW21

A fast-paced series that’s by kids, about kids and for kids – and filled with plenty of laughs! Kid Stew inspires and enlightens kids of all ages to learn more about books, music, the arts and science.

Wimee’s Words

Monday – Thursday at 3 p.m. on WLIW21

Wimee is a fun lovable robot that inspires kids to learn through creativity. Preschoolers and kindergarteners join Wimee and friends for wacky wordplay, silly songs, and playful conversation in an interactive literacy show that features real kids.

Curious Crew

Monday – Thursday at 3:30 p.m. on WLIW21

Inquisitive kids join Dr. Rob Stephenson to take a hands-on approach to scientific exploration in Emmy Award-winning Curious Crew! Each episode features a cast of real kids working with Dr. Rob to discover elements of science through experiments, information about STEM, and more.

Into the Outdoors

Fridays at 3:30 p.m. on WLIW21

Part science lesson and part travelogue, Into the Outdoors features young explorers learning about energy conservation and the science behind maintaining a healthy planet. Into the Outdoors aims to get kids to want to go outside to explore, discover and understand the natural world around them.

Let’s Learn (Grades Pre-K-2):

Monday – Friday 4:00 p.m. on WLIW21

Let’s Learn helps children ages 3-8 keep learning from home! Focusing on foundational reading and writing skills, literacy, math, science, social studies and the arts, the series also supports social emotional learning and brings viewers on virtual field trips to see dance performances, meet animals, visit botanical gardens and more. The series is produced by The WNET Group in partnership with the New York City Department of Education.
