The streets of New York City, deserted for nearly two months, have in the last few days and nights become a powder keg of unrest and conflict. The death of George Floyd, at the hands of police in Minneapolis, has sparked protests across the country. In New York, it has also opened up old wounds brought on by the death of Eric Garner in Staten Island six years ago.
The last few days have seen dozens of arrests, as tense demonstrations across the city have at times turned violent. Amid the chaos, the conduct of the NYPD, has again, come under scrutiny, this time after video circulated, showing two police cars driving into a crowd of protestors this weekend in Brooklyn. All of this plays out against the backdrop of a citywide lockdown in the midst of a pandemic.
What is at the heart of the clash between protestors and the police? Is it a lack of sensitivity training at the Academy? Are there extremists trying to infiltrate the force or are they blending in to incite the crowd? These are just some of the questions host Jenna Flanagan will probe tonight with two decorated retired NYPD officers.
