Brian Cosgrove Interviews 16-year-old Banjo Player Ahead of Brooklyn Folk Fest

Nora Brown started playing banjo at 6 years old. Now 16, she will be one of the headlining performers at the 13th annual Brooklyn Folk Festival.

The annually sold-out festival takes its inspiration from the early days of the Newport Folk Festival to present a vibrant array of grassroots traditional music, songwriters, and some better-known touring musicians. 2021’s lineup includes a powerful array of sounds, with music in American genres like blues, old-time and trad-jazz alongside traditional music from Colombia, Ukraine, the Balkans, West Africa, Klezmer, and more.

On Friday night, Nora will be playing songs off her 2021 Jalopy Records release Sidetrack My Engine,” which was recorded in mono to tape in an underground brick arched space in Brooklyn NY.
