In 2013, the United Neighborhood Houses Junior Board sent 90 care packages to students from NYC who got to college with the help the community-based college access programs in our network. These gifts included dorm room necessities, gift cards, snacks, and a personal letter that featured contact information for each student’s UNH member agency college counselor or social worker. Statistics show that 80% of low-income first-generation students leave college within six years without a degree. The care packages are intended to upend that statistic by encouraging students to stay in touch with their settlement house network and shows them that we are rooting for them. In 2014, 115 college students received a care package!
